Dear Louise and Family;
Scott and I were deeply saddened to learn of Martha's death, although we did know she had been unwell for some time. Hopefully, she was at ease near the end and you were all there to comfort her. My first introduction to Martha was as a librarian fresh out of graduate school when I went to work at the Steele Memorial Library. She was a wonderful mentor and an even kinder co-worker. As I learned the many vagaries of public service, she taught me the meaning of commitment, professionalism and how to be gracious in even the most stressful situations with library patrons from all walks of life. Then, Scott and I were both privileged to meet her dear Joe at assorted library functions. He was her perfect match and they seemed to be an almost ethereal couple. Our last image of them together was at their house in Elmira when Joe was ill and we were all dropping by with assorted meals and bakery treats. They were there together, sitting comfortably in their respective chairs, reading and discussing books, music and issues of the day. What a remarkably civilized and endearing couple. Please know you are in our thoughts and that Martha will long be remembered for her sweet smile, gracious manner and bright mind.
