Obituary of Thelma L. Squires

A lifelong resident of the Elmira area, passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday, February 24, 2016 at the age of 92. Thelma was a daughter of John and Ruth Andrews Litteer. She was predeceased by her husband George E. Squires; sister and brother-in-law Jane and Edward Owens. Thelma is survived by her five sons and their families, David L. and Jude E. Squires of Corning with their sons, Mark and David; Daniel C. Squires with Jodi Wheeler of Pine City and his children, Michael Squires, Melissa Schmidt and Lindsey Squires; John J. and Jean Squires of Elkton MD with daughters, Barbara Styer and Amy Graybill; Ronald G. and Ann Squires of Elmira with children, Dana and Luann Squires; Stephen E. Squires of Chicago IL with sons, Graham and Ian Squires; sister and brother-in-law Jean and Carter Perkins of Atlanta GA; brother and sister-in-law John and JoAnne Litteer of Liverpool NY; several great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Thelma was a graduate of Watkins Glen High School and a 1944 graduate of Elmira College with a Bachelor's Degree in Latin and French. She taught briefly after graduation before moving on to work at SM Flickenger in Elmira for over 40 years. Wanting to keep active Thelma then went to work for Deister and Butler Jewelers for 13 years. She was an avid reader. Thelma never lost her desire to teach and she enjoyed tutoring her grandchildren. Family and friends are invited to McInerny Funeral Home, 502 West Water Street, Elmira, on Monday, February 29, 2016 from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. A private family burial will take place at Elmwood Cemetery in Caton NY. Those wishing may remember Thelma with a donation to Meals on Wheels of Chemung County, 150 Fox St., Elmira NY 14901. The Squires family would like to extend their sincere thanks to home health care aides, Annette, Dar and Ashley for the wonderful care they provided to Thelma for the last six months.
