Age 89, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, September 27, 2015. Joan was born in Elmira, the daughter of Florance and Helen (McCarthy) Curran. She was predeceased by her brother, Rev. Joseph F. Curran S.J. Joan is survived by sons and daughters in law, Michael and Deborah Powell of Marblehead MA with children Katie (Ted) Lubitz and Tyler Powell; Jerome and Susan Powell of Rochester NY; Kevin Powell of Houston TX; Christopher and Pamela Powell of Bourbonnais IL with children Jonathan and Kelsey Powell; daughter and son-in-law, Patricia and Iraj Fakouri of London England with children Farzin and Yasmin Fakouri; great granddaughter Chloe Mae Lubitz; brother and sister-in-law, Dr. Thomas and Barbara Curran of Pittsford NY; several nieces and nephews. Joan was a graduate of Elmira Catholic High School and St. Joseph's Hospital School of Nursing. Joan was an avid bridge player and an inspirational teacher. She became a Silver Life Master of bridge in May of 2009. Joan was known for her indomitable sense of humor and lightening quick wit. Family and friends are invited to McInerny Funeral Home, 502 W. Water Street, Elmira, on Friday, October 9, 2015 from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, October 10, 2015 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Patrick's Church, Elmira. Committal prayers and interment will follow at St. Peter and Paul's Cemetery. Donations in memory of Joan may be directed to St. Joseph's Hospital Foundation, 555 St. Joseph's Blvd., Elmira NY 14901.
