Obituary of Marie Gantert McGlenn

Elmira: Age 96, passed away Sunday, May 4, 2014, after a long and beautiful life, surrounded by her family and dear friends. Marie was born December 20, 1917 in Cortland NY, a daughter of Leo and Hazel (Whitmarsh) Gantert. She is predeceased by her husband G. Raymond McGlenn, and brothers and sisters-in-law, Edward and Mary Gantert, Charles and Louise Gantert. Marie is survived by her nieces and nephews, Nancy (LeRoy) Ryan of Branford CT, Patricia (John) Mahon, Judy Eberle, Linn (Joe) Smith, William Gantert, and Richard (Daisy) Gantert, all of Elmira; eight great nephews, four great nieces; numerous great-great nieces and great-great nephews. Marie was a communicant of Our Lady of Lourdes Church and a member of its Rosary Alter Society, as well as the Lazarus Committee and the Corpus Christie Committee. She was also a member of the Ladies of Charity. Marie earned her Bachelor's Degree from Elmira College and her Master's Degree from Syracuse University. She was a Business Teacher in New York State for thirty-three and a half years and was retired from Southside High School. Her career led to memberships with NEA, NYSRTA, Business Teachers of NYS and the Elmira Area Retired Teachers Association. Marie was the first moderator of the Dominican Laity, Mary Queen of Apostles Chapter, where she served for seven years. She was a member of the Chemung Chapter of the DAR having done extensive work on the family genealogy, especially on her mother's side, discovering that the Whitmarsh family had come to America in 1635. Friends are invited to Marie's Mass of Christian Burial on Friday, May 9, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. at Our Lady of Lourdes Church. Interment, with committal prayers, will follow at St. Peter & Paul's Cemetery.
