Obituary of Mary Bernadette Miller

Mary Bernadette Miller Age 71 of Elmira, died Saturday, March 20, 2010 at the Arnot Ogden Medical Center SNF. Mary B. was the daughter of the late Dr. Donald H. and Bernadette (Hassett) Miller. She was also predeceased by her sister Susan T. Miller on Dec. 6, 2007, Mary B. is survived by her sister Kathleen Miller Dzura of Bryn Mawr PA with her daughters, Anastasia Dzura (Steve Tsolis) and Natasha Dzura (Stephen Kamakaris); brother and sister-in-law, Donald and Kathleen Miller of Burke VA with their daughters, Bridget (John III) Euliano and Colleen (Eric) Stegner; brother Christopher Miller of St. Louis MO with Melinda Hohrein; sister and brother-in-law, Maria Regina and George Gublo of Elmira with their daughters, Bernadette-Louise and Faithe Regina Gublo; great niece and great nephew, Tess and Aidan Tsolis; brother-in-law Ned M. Covault of Detroit MI; close friend Kay Schueler of Elmira; also surviving are several cousins and numerous friends. Mary B. was a member of the first graduating class from Notre Dame High School. She went on to earn a BA Degree from St. Bonaventure University in Olean NY. Mary B. taught elementary school for a few years on Long Island before going on to earn her JD Degree from Albany Law School. After completing law school, she worked for two years with the IRS in Newburgh NY and then returned to Elmira. She practiced law with the McCabe and Miller law firm in Elmira from 1968 to 1978. Mary B. passed the Florida bar, moved to Florida, and practiced law there for five years. She returned to Elmira in 1983 and again practiced law until 1997. Mary B. then went to work with the Tompkins County Department of Social Service as a Financial Investigator in the Child Support Unit until her retirement in 2004. After retirement, Mary B. volunteered by reading to children at Riverside School, as well as tutoring adults preparing for their GED exam at the Steele Memorial Library. She enjoyed working crossword and jigsaw puzzles. Mary B. loved to dance, travel and play bridge. Family and friends are invited to McInerny Funeral Home, corner of W. Water and Walnut Streets, on Friday, March 26, 2010 from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Visitation at the funeral home will continue on Saturday, March 27, 2010 from 8:00 a.m. to 8:45 a.m. when a prayer service will be held. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 9:30 a.m. in Our Lady of Lourdes Church. Committal prayers and interment will follow at St. Peter and Paul's Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in Mary B's memory may be directed to Notre Dame High School, 1400 Maple Ave., Elmira NY 14904. The family of Mary B. would like to thank the Arnot Ogden Medical Center SNF staff for all the care they gave Mary B. during the 10 months she resided at the Arnot, as well as to Southern Tier Hospice for their guidance during her last week of life.
