Obituary of Herbert Johnson JR

Herbert M. Johnson, Jr. Age 80, of Elmira, died Wednesday, September 1, 2010 at the Arnot Ogden Medical Center. Herbert was born November 20, 1929, son of Herbert M., Sr. and Eleanor (Theetge) Johnson. He is predeceased by his wife Rita (Cash) Johnson. Herbert is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Diane L. and Scott Stevens of Elmira; brothers and sisters-in-law, Gordon and Shelby Johnson of Maryland, and Irving and Bernice Johnson of Ohio; niece Sandra Coleman of Virginia. Herbert was a U S Army veteran serving during the Korean War. He was a retired union plumber with Local 167, working for American Warming & Ventilating Co. and Kimble Heating & Air Conditioning. A founding member of the West Elmira Fire Department, he was very active with the fire department over the years, and was given the status of "Lifetime Member" a few years ago. He was also a member of the Elmira Heights American Legion Post #154. Herbert had a long time interest in airplanes. In earlier years he would race hydro planes on Seneca Lake. Herbert was a volunteer with the National Warplane Museum. Herbert enjoyed summers at the family cottage on Waneta Lake. Friends are invited to McInerny Funeral Home, corner of Water and Walnut Sts., on Tuesday, September 7, 2010 from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, September 8, 2010 at 1:30 p.m. at Woodlawn Cemetery. A procession will form at the Walnut St. gate at 1:15 p.m. Donations in Herbert's memory may be directed to either West Elmira Fire Department, 1299 W. Water Street, Elmira, NY 14905 or Elmira Heights American Legion Post #154, 236 Scottwood Avenue, Elmira Heights, NY 14903.
