Age 83, passed away at St. Joseph's Hospital Skilled Nursing Facility on Thursday, November 9, 2023.  Dorothy was born in Elmira, a daughter of the late Walter J. Bartkowski and Margaret J. (Soper) Bartkowski.  She was predeceased by her first husband, Joseph Demyan; sisters and brothers-in-law, Margaret and Donald Estes, Donna and John Mashanic, brother Raymond Bartkowski.  Dorothy is survived by Antonio "Tony" Sgro, sister and brother-in-law Gloria and William Wright of Lawrenceville, PA; sister-in-law Georgette Bartkowski of Elmira; brother-in-law Dominic Sgro; nieces and nephews; Margaret Marks of Horseheads, NY, Kim (Jim) Marks of Elmira, NY, Beth Fleming of Horseheads, NY; great nieces and nephews Peter Marks of Elmira, NY, Jackie (Bruce) Hauver of Elmira, NY, Kristina Fleming of Allentown, PA, Carissa (Brad) Hauver of Elmira, NY; great grand nieces; Maxine, Lyla, and Hunter Hauver of Elmira NY, Raedyn Fleming of Allentown, PA; cousin and caregiver, Gail Bartkowski of Elmira, NY

     After graduating from Horseheads High School, Dorothy was employed for many years at Westinghouse in Horseheads, NY.  Later on, when her husband became ill, Dorothy managed their business, DD&S Electronics Glass in Erin, NY.  Dorothy and her husband Tony were active members of Most Holy Name of Jesus Parish, Elmira.  In her retirement years, Dorothy spent much of her time volunteering for her church and community, including 20+ years at the Food Pantry in Elmira.  She also assisted CareFirstNY with their largest annual Petal Pushers campaign each year.

     Dorothy was an optimistic person, filled with 'spirit’, ceaseless energy, and a desire to know all she could take in about life, love, and fun - a person who accepted reality, and believed that the goodness in life always outweighed the heartaches.  Her love of family, friends, pets, and flowers was always abundantly apparent!  Her gift to others was a helping hand wherever needed.

     Family and friends are invited to call at McInerny Funeral Home, 502 W. Water St., Elmira, on Saturday, December 9, 2023, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.  A funeral service will follow at 1:00 p.m.  Committal prayers and interment will follow at St. Mary Our Mother Cemetery in Horseheads, NY.  Those wishing to may remember Dorothy with a donation to
