Obituary of Pauline Nybeck Hennegan

Age 93, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her loving family on Wednesday, October 11, 2023.  Pauline was born at 1019 Davis Street, Elmira, in the Morrell family home, the youngest, the only girl, and last surviving of ten children, to Anthony J. and Gertrude (Kuhn) Morrell.  She was predeceased by her husband Joseph Hennegan; nine brothers, Joseph, Paul, Edmund, Carl, Anthony, Gerald, Jack, Tom, and Donald Morrell.  Pauline is survived by her children, Eric Nybeck, with Kristen, of Pine City, Michael Nybeck, with wife Beverly, of Myrtle Beach SC, Matthew Nybeck of Arlington TX, Ellen Nybeck, with Scott Leljedal, of Elmira, Amy Boyce, with husband Jeff, of Denver CO; grandchildren, Monica (Michael) O’Keefe, Erik (Cassie) Nybeck, Daniel (Ashley) Nybeck, Lauren (Daniel) Farrar, Charles Nybeck, Vivian and Andrew Ellison; several great grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews. 

Pauline graduated from Elmira Free Academy and attended St. Joseph’s Hospital’s School of Nursing graduating with the class of 1951. She had a robust nursing career for many years in both Ithaca and Elmira, NY serving as a clinical and home health care Registered Nurse.   Later in life she attended Mansfield University and earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Human Services.   She worked for both A.R.C and United Cerebral Palsy for many years serving Schuyler, Steuben, and Chemung counties as a Home Service Director.  She was a fierce advocate for the families she served, providing many needed services. She retired from United Cerebral Palsy in 2002.

Pauline enjoyed spending quality time with her family and her friends.  She was a member of the Elmira Senior Center where she engaged in her chair caning classes as well as her daily exercise classes.  Pauline met with her nursing colleagues regularly for lunches and other social events.  She remained active in her community attending events at Brand Park and advocating for her neighborhood. Pauline took pride in her home and lovely manicured yard.  Pauline enjoyed traveling with her husband Joe by her side experiencing many exciting places both in the U.S. and abroad.  Pauline was the matriarch and the rock of her family.  She will be forever missed and will live in our memories and hearts.

Family and friends are invited to McInerny Funeral Home, 502 W. Water St., Elmira, on Sunday, October 15, 2023, from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.  A prayer service will be held at the funeral home on Monday, October 16, 2023 at 9:15 a.m., followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. at St. Patrick’s Church, 604 Park Place, Elmira.  A private internment will take place at Fitzsimmons Cemetery.  We invite friends and family to help us celebrate Pauline’s life, following her Mass, at the Southport Fire Department, 1001 Carl Street, Elmira, at 12:00 noon.
