Dad, I miss you terribly but feel your guidance remains with me daily. Your unconditional love for family and ability to make sure we knew you were always there for us is something I will try to replicate in my own life. Please continue to watch over all of us from above.
Love Kathy

He Was Always There May 24, 2023
Jim McFarland, our dad and grandfather, was a man of values, love and unselfish giving throughout his entire life. Dad’s young life was not easy. His mom died when he was just 6 years old leaving him to live with a variety of relatives until his dad remarried. In spite of the difficulties, he went through, he always remained optimistic and dedicated to his family. He was always there for them.
Mom and dad have been together since they were 13 years old. They met when mom was playing basketball for St. Casmir’s and dad was there routing for St. Patrick’s. After defeating St. Casmir’s dad went up to mom and said, “So sorry Rynie.” Being one not to hold back, she grabbed his nose and twisted it. That was their beginning and from that point on, he was always there for her.
After graduation, dad went on to Delhi to receive his degree in engineering. They were married in 1958. Dad’s engineering degree led him and mom to various locations around the country where he was foreman on large national projects like the Verrazano Bridge, Mt. Sinai Hospital and many others. In 1963, he was asked to consider helping his father-in-law with a small beer business that was needing their help. Without hesitation, dad left what was going to be a successful engineering career to help mom’s family with their hometown business. With dad’s help that business eventually grew into the successful local business known as John G. Ryan Beer Distributorship. Dad was there for his in-laws. He was always there for them.
When dad’s children came into his and mom’s life, there was no one more unselfish with their love and time. Dad believed in working hard but also loved to teach us about having fun, whether by getting out on a dance floor footloose and carefree or by traveling and seeing the world. He loved the many trips he and mom brought us on and he especially loved his trips to Ireland. Dad taught us how to work hard but to enjoy life. He was always there for us.
Dad and mom believed strongly in the values of church and community. He taught us that no matter how tired we were Sunday morning, everyone would be in the church pew. He volunteered routinely both at church and his favorite club, The Hibernians and gave unselfishly both in labor, time and money to advance those parts of his life that he loved and believed in so much. Dad was there for his church and the Hibernians. He was always there for them.
When each of us married, dad treated our spouses with the same love and care he had always given us growing up. He always made each of them feel wanted, and would give the shirt off his back to help them with anything they needed. He became their second father and they loved him as such. He was always there for them.
Whenever any of us needed a home repair, the brains of the engineer began to turn and within hours he would have conceived, drawn up and began the timeline to build whatever we were in need of. From sheet rocking to building warehouses, garages at the lake and any conceivable building project, he and his toolbelt were there to help us. No questions asked other than “when can I start”? And by the way he was a perfectionist in every thing he worked on. Dad was a family man and he never said no to helping us build our lives better. He was always there for us.
When the grandkids came, they were the shining spot in his and mom’s life. Keuka lake was going to be the away homestead and the grandkids got the benefit, as we did, of having the most generous Grandpa and Grandma on the planet. From building a full-sized playhouse for them on the lake to taking them to the local barber for a haircut, dad gave his entire energy to his grandkids and they loved him dearly. Everything he did was for his wife, kids and grandkids. There wasn’t a selfish bone in his body. He was always there for us.
When dad got sick with kidney disease five years ago, he required dialysis three times a week for 3-4 hours at a time. He also had balance problems and his ability to get from one place to another required a walker. The man who had been the hardest worker and pillar of the family with mom, for so long, couldn’t be that anymore. And although he struggled with life, he still made us all laugh at every turn and he never and we mean never, complained about his pain, limitations or suffering. Even though he couldn’t take on any new projects he certainly wanted to be involved and went back to being the foreman as he was in his early career.
As recently as this past weekend he oversaw the summerizing of the boat at the lake. It was hard for him as a man who never asked for help and now needed help from all of us. Mom cared dearly for him throughout all his difficulties and took on things daily that none of us could have ever done. Dad appreciated and loved her so much. Our beautiful parents celebrated their 65th Anniversary last Wednesday after beginning their friendship at age 13. She was always there for him as he was always there for her.
We all tried to help dad and mom as any close family would during the past several years but his greatest concern in the end was the burden, he felt he was placing on his family. He must have said how much he loved and appreciated everything we all were doing for him a thousand times. And by the way he was never ever a burden. The decades of love and giving that this man gave his family eclipsed one hundred times any efforts that we did to help him at his time of need. Right to the end dad brought love and joy to our all our lives. And right to the end --- HE WAS ALWAYS THERE FOR US.

Sending so much love to all of the McFarland family. Knowing Jim, his wife and kids and seeing them at dialysis over the last five years has been one of the highlights of my career in healthcare. The McFarlands have a way of making you feel like you’re one of their very own. Thinking of all of you.

My memory of Jim will forever be centered on his love of family, commitment to the AOH and his sense of humor. Jim was.an integral part of the Hibernians for many years from starting the "60 Club," and his generosity with the makeover of our beautiful kitchen. God bless Jim and his family. We will miss him forever, but God surely has a place for him.
