Obituary of Rose Marie DiNardo McLaughlin
Elmira: Age 86, died at 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday, March 14, 2023 following a brief illness. Born in Hornell she was the daughter of the late Frank DiNardo and Louise Divito Di Nardo.
Rose was a graduate of St. Ann's School and later graduated from Hornell High School, Class of 1953. In 1956 she graduated from Mercy School of Nursing which was affiliated with Canisuis College in Buffalo, NY. Upon her graduation she accepted a job with the Bath V.A. Medical Center in Bath, NY., where she was a Registered Nurse, working on and off over the years, until her retirement on October 31, 1990. Rose married Jerry McLaughlin , the love of her life, on August 16, 1958, where upon they made their home in Elmira.
Rose Marie and her sister, Angeline Sgro, with the assistance of Father Eugene Weiss and Father Joseph DeLuca (a missionary priest of the Blessed Sacrament) set up the Elmira Divine Mercy Chapel. Since then Rose had served, faithfully, in many positions right on up to Head Coordinator for the past several years. Rose Marie was also involved as a leader in the yearly Divine Mercy Novena held at St. Casmir's Church, and the Living Rosary that was held in October and sponsored by America Needs Fatima. She truly loved every moment spent on overseeing what went on at the chapel, be it good, or bad. Rose Marie also loved her family, and took great joy in cooking her famous spaghetti and meat balls for them on many a Sunday and holidays. Her high school yearbook had pegged her as being a perfectionist, and that is what she was for the rest of her life. She also loved calling her relatives and talking for hours on end and they loved her for doing so.
Rose Marie was predeceased by her parents, sisters, Angeline and Lucy Sgro, and brother Michael DiNardo. She is survived by her husband, Jerry; children, Patricia Samuels of San Antonio, TX, Sean McLaughlin of Panama City, FL, Eileen Robbins (Rick) of Elmira, Seamus McLaughlin of Big Flats; brother-in-law Joseph P. McLaughlin (Myrna) of Lakeside, CA; brothers-in-law, Anthony Sgro (Dorothy) and Dominic Sgro, both of Elmira; grandsons, Jason (Jenna) Samuels, Ryan (Kelly) Samuels, and Kyle Robbins, all of Elmira; granddaughters, Elizabeth Robbins of Elmira, Briede Shaff, Eileen McLaughlin, Michaline McLaughlin, all of Syracuse; great-grandchildren, Luca, Sophia and Sean Shaff, all of Newfield, NY, Grayson and Rory May Samuels, both of Elmira, Maira McLaughlin of Syracuse, Dominic, Vantroy, Clemente, Gianni, and Santino.
