Obituary of Theresa M. Hurley
Elmira: Age 95, went peacefully at the Chemung County Nursing Facility on Sunday, February 19, 2023. Theresa was born and raised in Elmira a daughter of Stanley and Mary (Kiczek) Makowiec. She is survived by her loving children and their spouses: Marlene and Charles LeMark of Elmira, Thomas, Esq. and Vicky Hurley of East Amherst NY; grandchildren: John (Andrea) LeMark of White Plains NY, Keith Thomas, Katherine Mary, Emily Rose, and Lauren Elizabeth Hurley all of East Amherst NY; great-grandchildren: Julia Megan and Amanda Eve LeMark of White Plains NY; along with her many loving nieces, nephews, friends, and neighbors. Theresa is predeceased by her brothers and sisters-in-law, Frank and Virginia Makovitch, Peter and Agnes Makovitch, Leo Makovitch, Henry and Marian Makowiec, Paul and Gwendolyn Makowiec; sisters and brothers-in-law, Blanche and Chester Stevens, Catherine and Joseph Kamas, Helen and Harold Coleman, Anna and Howard Minchin, Loretta and Bert Deats.
Theresa attended St. Casimir's School, E.F.A. and continued her education with night courses at Elmira College. After working for fourteen years at Peterson's Furniture Store she pursued a career in the medical field having worked for Dr. Lawrence W. Linderberry, Dr. Nils Peterson, Drs. Brooks, Sharlow, King and Dolkart. After retiring in 1995 Theresa worked per diem for Dr. Reed P. Haag and the AOMC in pre-admissions. She was also a licensed cosmetologist, having worked at that in her spare time.
Theresa was a life long communicant of St. Casimir's Church where she served as a Eucharistic Minister, was a member of their Rosary and Sacred Heart Society, the Wanda Circle, and the Legion of Mary. She was also a member of St. Joseph's Hospital Auxiliary, was a Brownie and Girl Scout leader at St. Casimir's School, Troop 29, and a past-president of, which was then known as, Credit Women International.
Theresa's family ties were deeply woven. Her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren were a great source of pride and love, along with her many dear friends and relatives. She loved traveling with her children, especially to the ocean as she was a great lover of the outdoors and the sun. Theresa's favorite place to go was to the blue Pacific Ocean. She was also a great supporter of the Buffalo Bills and attended as many of their games as possible.
Relatives and friends are invited to McInerny Funeral Home, 502 W. Water Street, Elmira, on Friday, February 24, 2023, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon. A funeral service will be held at 12:00 noon. Interment, with committal prayers, will then take place at Woodlawn Cemetery. Those wishing may remember Theresa with a donation to Most Holy Name of Jesus Parish, 1010 Davis Street, Elmira NY 14901.
Theresa's family extends their sincere thanks to the staff on the fourth floor of the Chemung County Nursing Facility for their excellent care.
