Obituary of John H. Powell

Age 96, passed away at Bethany Nursing Home, Horseheads, on October 31, 2022. Jack was born in Elmira, a son of John H. and Mary (Wetherell) Powell. He is predeceased by his wife Edna Mae (Sanders) Powell in 2007 and brother Fred in 2013. Jack is survived by his loving daughter Mary Ann Coleman of St. Petersburg FL, with husband Daniel F.; granddaughter Jennifer Lin Anson of Palm Harbor FL with husband Matt; grandson Paul Coleman of Horseheads, with wife Kathleen and children Lynsey and Evan. Jack served in the US Marine Corp, in the Pacific, during WWII and was on Iwo Jima, and in China. He was a NYS Corrections Officer working at the Elmira Correctional Facility for most of his career. Jack was active for many years in Southside Cinderella baseball, the Marine Corp. Color Guard, The American Legion and the Ancient Order of Hibernians, Msgr. John J. Lee Division. He was a long-time communicant at St. Mary's Church, Elmira, where he served as an usher. Jack will be laid to rest in his family plot at St. Peter & Paul's Cemetery, at his family's convenience. Jack's family would like to thank the staff at Appleridge, Bethany Home Care and Bethany Manor for their excellent care provided to Jack in his later years.
