Obituary of Kevin R. Moshier
Please share a memory of Kevin to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Pine City - Kevin Moshier's walk on this earth came to a close on January 25, 2022 at home in West Roxbury, MA. He walked with his faithful savior Jesus Christ during a full and happy life, through five years of appendix cancer treatment in New York and Massachusetts, and during his last days in hospice care with his family in the Boston, MA area.
Kevin was born in Beaver Falls, PA to the late Eleanor and Kenneth Moshier. He grew up in Clarence Center, NY with his brothers, the late Keith Moshier, Dr. Jeffrey Moshier (Margaret), and twin brother Kent Moshier (Elena). Kevin graduated from Boston University in 1977 with a bachelor's degree in philosophy and political science. He attended law school at Boston College, graduating with a J.D. degree in 1981. At law school he met his wife-to-be, Karen Gooderum, and they were married in 1983. He was the loving father of three daughters, Samantha (Tim McInerny), Michaela (Arnoux Nicolas), and Juliana, and proud grandfather of Zachary McInerny and Kevin Cassius Nicolas. He enjoyed many good times with Karen's family, his father-in-law Alan (Lee), his late mother-in-law Virginia, sisters- and brothers-in-law Carol (Jim) Luster, Laura (Don) Stevens, and Steve Gooderum, and many nieces and nephews on both sides of the family.
Kevin practiced law for over 35 years in Elmira, NY. His first job was as assistant Chemung County Public Defender. He also served as town attorney for the Town of Catlin. He then headed the legal department for the Chemung County Department of Social Services, where he prosecuted child abuse and neglect cases. Finally, he worked for eighteen years for Mental Hygiene Legal Services providing legal representation to mentally ill and developmentally disabled clients, a job he loved. He retired in 2018. Although he had many professional achievements, he took greatest pride in his role as a husband and father.
Kevin was dedicated to serving his church and his community. At North Presbyterian Church in Elmira, NY he served as Sunday school teacher, youth group leader, deacon, and elder. In later years he attended Twin Tiers Evangelical Presbyterian Church in Big Flats, NY and Church of the Cross in Boston, MA. Kevin served on the City of Elmira Zoning Board of Appeals and on several not-for-profit boards, including the Southern Tier Pregnancy Resource Center and Able2. All his life, in his words, he "tried to do some good."
We are grateful for the care of Kevin's oncology team at Massachusetts General Hospital, who gave him five good years after his cancer diagnosis. We also thank his hospice caregivers from Care Dimensions and his oncology team at the Wilmot Cancer Center in Rochester. And we are very thankful for the loving support of friends, neighbors, family, and church family during this time.
Family and friends are invited to attend a memorial service for Kevin at 1:00 p.m. on Friday May 20, 2022 at North Presbyterian Church, 921 College Avenue, Elmira, NY, Reverend Evan D. Hansen officiating. Masks are encouraged.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Kevin's memory may be made to Able2, 1118 Charles Street, Elmira NY 14904 or the Southern Tier Pregnancy Resource Center, 375 W. Water Street, Elmira NY 14901.
