Obituary of Thomas J. Gill

Age 97, passed away peacefully at the Bath VA Medical Center on Sunday, January 16, 2022. Tom, a son of John A. and Blanche (Walker) Gill, was born in Elmira, the oldest of 5 children. He was predeceased by his sisters, Ruth A. Thomas and Ellamae Gill Case. Tom is survived by his brothers and sister-in-law, John E. Gill, William and Lucy Gill all of Elmira; niece Diane Wood; nephews, Dick Thomas, Levi Case, Thomas and William Gill; several great nieces and great nephews. Tom was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran who served in the Central Pacific during WW II. He worked at Remington Rand for 22 years and was a supervisor at the time the plant closed. Tom went on to work for another 14 years at Westinghouse as a supervisor before retiring. He was a member of the Horseheads Elks Club. Tom enjoyed staying active throughout his life. He was an avid baseball player, bowler, fly fisherman and golfer. He played a year of professional baseball and was named Elmira Bowler of the Year 4 times and is in the Elmira Bowling Association Hall of Fame. Family and friends are invited to McInerny Funeral Home, 502 W. Water Street, Elmira, on Sunday, January 23, 2022, from 12:00 noon to 2:00 p.m. A funeral service will follow at 2:00 p.m. Military honors will be held at the conclusion of the funeral service. Burial will take place at Woodlawn Cemetery at a later date. Masks are required at the funeral home.
