Obituary of Mary T. Amisano
Please share a memory of Mary to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
We are deeply saddened to share that our beloved Wife, Mother, and Grandmother, Mary Teresa (Skidmore) Amisano, passed away on July 25, 2021, at home, at peace, and surrounded by her loving family. Mary grew up with her parents, six brothers, and her sister in Levittown, NY. Her father nicknamed her “Sparkle Plenty” for the brilliance of her smile and of her mind, traits that followed her throughout her life. She was a bright and conscientious student, graduating as the valedictorian of her high school class. During her time at Marymount College, she traveled to Europe prior to graduating Magna Cum Laude with a degree in French Studies. Throughout this period of her life, she worked summers at her parent’s Catholic Girl’s Camp in New Hampshire, where she developed an affection for horses and swimming. Later in life, Mary would fondly recall the years after graduation, during which she resided in Vermont, working in restaurants, skiing, and eventually travelling to Central America to live with her uncle, Rev. Harold Skidmore, in Panama. Upon her return, she met the love of her life, Guy Amisano. They married and began a fruitful life together in Horseheads, NY, bearing four children and eleven grandchildren (to date). Her marriage was a celebration of life, raising her children, planting bountiful gardens, and infusing every meal, every gift, every day with kindness, love, and care.
Mary’s life reflected her values: devotion, honesty, duty, grace, generosity, compassion. She was devoted to God, to her husband, to her children, and to her grandchildren. She put on no airs, and saw equal value and beauty in every human life. She was grateful for everything she ever had, and quietly contributed to numerous charities, particularly those focused on protecting and providing for babies and children.
Mary is survived by her husband Guy Louis, Sr., her son Guy Louis, Jr. (with wife Katherine and their children Guy Louis IV, Grace, and Joseph), her daughter Elaine (with her husband Brendan and their sons Peter, Charles, Jonas, Gabriel, Anthony, Dominic, and Michael), her son John, Sr. (with wife Courtney and their son John, Jr.), her daughter Adele (with her husband Chris) and her siblings Katherine Schiller, Richard, Mark, and Terrence. She is predeceased by her parents Alfred and June Skidmore, and her siblings Al, Jay, and Matthew.
Friends and family may call Friday, July 30, 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. at McInerny Funeral Home, 502 W. Water Street, Elmira. All are welcome to attend Mary's Mass of Christian Burial celebrated Saturday, July 31, 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary Our Mother Church, 816 Broad Street, Horseheads NY, with Fr. Matthew Jones as the celebrant.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be offered to SmileTrain, a charity that offer treatment to children born with cleft lips and/or palates. (smiletrain.org)
