Obituary of Mary Ellen Marks

Age 93, passed away peacefully at the Chemung County Nursing Facility on Thursday, February 25, 2021. Mary was born in Elmira, a daughter of John and Ellen (Scopes) O'Connor. In addition to her parents she is predeceased by son Jack G. Marks, brother John S. O'Connor, sister and brother-in-law Patricia and Richard Roemmelt, sister-in-law Matilda O'Connor. Mary Ellen is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, Peter M. and Kathleen Marks of New York City, John Michael and Linda Marks of Elmira, Stephen J. and Martha Marks of Madison MS, David E. and Marilyn Marks of Big Flats, James E. and Kimberly Marks of Elmira; Jack's wife Margaret Marks of Horseheads; grandchildren, Jessica Marks, Kathleen (Jeff) Gray, Amanda Marks, Amy (Travis) Beals, Meghan (Shane) Devlin, Jacquelyn (Bruce II) Hauver, Peter Marks, Mike Manwaring; great-grandchildren, Milo, Molly, Roland, Chloe, Patrick, Maxine, and Monicah; brothers and sisters-in-law, Richard and Hiroko Tolbert O'Connor of Golden Glow NY, R. Michael and Nancy O'Connor of North Attleboro MA; several nieces, nephews and cousins of the O'Connor, Marks, Roemmelt and Mullen families. Mary Ellen was a 1945 graduate of Elmira Free Academy and a 1948 graduate of St. Joseph's Hospital School of Nursing. She had a long career as a registered nurse. Mary Ellen worked at St. Joseph's Hospital for 20 years before going to work for the Arnot Ogden Medical Center for another 20 years. She finished her career working as a traveling nurse. Services will be held at a later date. The Marks family would like to extend their sincere thanks to the entire staff of the Chemung County Nursing Facility for the professional and loving care they provided to Mary Ellen over the last five years. Those wishing may remember Mary Ellen with a donation to Meals on Wheel of Chemung County, 409 William Street, Elmira NY 14901.
