Age 79, passed away on Wednesday, December 5, 2018. Gene was born in Milford, PA, a son of the late George and Helen Scanlin Hassen. He was predeceased by his son Timothy Hassen and uncle Frank Scanlin. Gene is survived by his wife of 53 years, Kathleen Gettsy Hassen; daughters and sons-in-law, Kim and Doug VanEtten of Homer, NY; Kristen and Tom Duffy of Elmira; daughter-in-law, Colleen Hassen of Pine City; grandchildren, Emma, Kaylee, Kory, Zachary, Tyler and Mallory; aunt Mary Kay Scanlin; along with nieces, nephews and cousins. Gene worked for Kennedy Valve in Elmira and then MacMillen Bloedal in Elmira Heights until his retirement in 2001. He enjoyed playing golf, watching horse races and summers on Keuka Lake with family and friends. Family and friends are invited to McInerny Funeral Home, 502 W. Water St., Elmira, on Tuesday, December 11, 2018 from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. A funeral service will follow at 6:15 p.m. Burial will be in Ashland Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please consider a remembrance in Gene's name to the Elmira Animal Shelter, 842 Linden Place Extension, Elmira NY 14901.
