Obituary of Michael J. Morrissey

Age 69, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by his family, after a hard fought battle with cancer and heart disease, on Thursday, November 22, 2018. Michael was born in Elmira a son of the late Thomas J., Jr. and Ann Cavanaugh Morrissey. He is also predeceased by father-in-law and mother-in-law Philip and Marion Graham Roe, sisters-in-law: Eileen Sweeney Morrissey and Rita Green Roe. Michael is survived by his wife Elizabeth A. "Betsy" Roe Morrissey; sons: Christopher M. Morrissey of Elmira, and Mark T. Morrissey of Sidney NY with sons, Michael and Matthew; brother and sister-in-law Thomas J., III and Suzanne Morrissey of Elmira; brothers-in-law and sister-in-law: Philip Roe of Latham NY, Stephen Roe of Elmira, William and Mary Roe of Elmira; nieces and nephews: Yvonne Roe, Shawn Morrissey, Kevin Morrissey, Kathryn Roe Mangan, Betsy Roe, Eileen Roe Sheehan and Bill Roe; along with numerous cousins and many good friends. Michael was a 1967 graduate of Southside High school where he was a standout basketball player. He retired from the New York State Department of Corrections after 27 years of service. Michael was an accomplished golfer, with a single digit handicap, enjoying all the local courses, especially Mark Twain Golf Course and the Elmira Country Club. He enjoyed starting every morning at Cozy Corner with coffee and breakfast meeting with friends to solve the world's problems. Michael became sober 26 years ago and his family is extremely proud and respectful of his accomplishment. He was a member of the Elmira Elks Lodge #62, the Msgr. John J. Lee Division of the Ancient Order of Hibernians and a long time communicant of St. Mary's Church. Family and friends are invited to McInerny Funeral Home, 502 W. Water Street, Elmira, on Monday, November 26, 2018 from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. A prayer service will be held at the funeral home on Tuesday, November 27, 2018, at 10:15 a.m., followed by an 11:00 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial at St. Mary's Church, 224 Franklin Street, Elmira. Michael's family wishes to thank Dr. Thomas Rodgers and his staff, particularly Leigh; and his canine staff "Joey and Howy", for their wonderful care of Michael over the last twenty years; especially the past two years.
