Obituary of Thomas Tarby
Please share a memory of Thomas to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
"Hi, my name is Tom Tarby, what's yours? This is how Tom greeted people all his life. Tom was born on April 9, 1950 to Harry and Emma (Coletta) Tarby, and lived his life in the Southern Tier of New York until his passing on Monday, May 7, 2018. Tom is survived by his brothers and sisters-in-law, Michael and Faith, of Elmira, Harry of Dansville NY, Nick and Porky of Elmira; along with many nieces and nephews. Tom was very outgoing and loved gatherings. He led a very full and rewarding life due to the caring staff of the Big Flats IRA Group Home. He had a strong work ethic, working for Capabilities, Inc. at various locations, but he especially enjoyed his years at Elmira College, Dining Services. Tom was always willing to assist with needed jobs at the home where he lived and appreciated all the opportunities afforded him by the supportive staff there. He especially liked it when he was invited to attend their family outings. Tom discovered a real fondness for baking and cooking, taking pride in the things he made. He loved traveling with People and Places, who made it possible for him to see places he had only seen photos of in magazines and books. Tom loved to dance and was an avid NY Yankee fan. He was a member of Aktion Club, a group of self- advocates sponsored by the Kiwanis Club. In retirement he volunteered at Reins of Hope and frequented the Senior Center in Horseheads. Tom's family is very thankful for his quality of life that was made possible through the Finger Lakes DDSO, and all the staff over the years who cared for Tom. They are appreciative of the dignity and comfort of care provided by the staff of AOMC-ICU and 2B during his final days. Visitation will be on Saturday, May 26, 2018 from 9:30 a.m. to 10:45 a.m., St. Patrick's Church, 604 Park Place, Elmira. Tom's Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11:00 a.m. Interment will take place at St. Peter and Paul's Cemetery at the convenience of the family. The family will provide flowers. Those wishing may remember Tom with a donation to Reins of Hope of Elmira, P O Box 206, Elmira NY 14902, www.reinsofhope.org. This is a nonprofit organization that provides therapeutic horseback riding opportunities for children and adults who have special needs.
