Obituary of Paul E. O'Leary

Age 88 of Pine City, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family, on Sunday, January 22, 2017. Paul was born on December 27, 1928 in Elmira, a son of the late William J. and Mary (Allen) O'Leary. He was predeceased by his loving wife Dolores (Douglas) O'Leary in 2004. Paul is also predeceased by brothers and sister-in-law, William J., Jr. and Patricia (Burke) O'Leary, Thomas O'Leary, sister-in-law Betty (Douglas) Strange, and brother-in-law Richard Douglas. He is survived by his beloved and devoted children and their spouses, Mary Lynn and Michael Maguire of Severna Park MD; Paul E., Jr. and Julianne O'Leary of Amherst NY; and Michael J. and Jillian O'Leary of Minneapolis MN. Also surving are his eight grandchildren, Kerry (Anthony) Ezersky, Michael and Sean Maguire, Matthew and Morgan O'Leary, Megan, Ryan and Colin O'Leary; great granchildren, Keegan, Harper and Kinsley Ezersky, Kylie and Michael III, Maguire; close family friend Barbara GlovIns Carine; numerous nieces, and nephews; sisters-in-law, Jean (John) Molnar, Dorothy Jordan; brother-in-law Robert (Sally) Douglas. Following high school Paul enlisted in the U S Marine Corps in 1946 where he continued his education and was promoted to Staff Sergeant. He served for seven years during the Korean War, being honorably discharged in 1952. He is a life member of the E J Brewer Detachment Marine Corps League. Paul then became a NY State Trooper attached to Troop "C" of Sidney NY and served in a number of stations in the Southern Tier, where in 1980 the Southern Tier Chapter of the Association of Former NY State Troopers was established. Paul was elected as the charter treasurer for several years. His final career was when he accepted a position with the Claims Department of Utica Mutual Insurance Co. where he served for 35 years, retiring as District Claims Manager. Paul was licensed to represent insurance carriers and employers in New York State Workers Compensation Court. Upon his retirement Paul was a volunteer with Meals on Wheels. He took great pride in his home and yard and enjoyed puttering around taking care of his property. A devout catholic, Paul was a life long member of St. Mary's Church, Elmira. Paul was loved and respected by everyone. He was a considerate and loving husband who cared for his wife Dolores at their home while she battled Alzheimer's. His family was everything to him. Paul will be forever loved and missed. A Mass of Chrisitan Burial will be held for Paul on Saturday, January 28, 2017, 11:00 a.m., St. Mary's Church, Elmira. Committal prayers and military honors will follow at St. Peter and Paul's Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, those wishing, may remember Paul with a donation to Notre Dame High School, 1400 Maple Avenue, Elmira NY 14904.
