Obituary of Lois Myer Gridley

Please share a memory of Lois to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Lois Myer Gridley, passed away peacefully on September 18, 2023. She is predeceased by her husband Lyman, of 63 years. Lois is survived by her sister Mary Johnston; children; Rich, Jeff, Alida, and Mimi; daughters-in-law Janie, Jeanne, and Debby; and son-in-law Norman. She was Nonnie to her beloved grandchildren Ali, Megan, Lindsay, Sydney, Nate, and Jake (with spouses Marc, Phil, Jamey, and Amanda) and great-grandchildren Carter, Maddie, Caroline, Isaac, PJ, Nora, and Gridley, who will miss her dearly. Lois and Lyman married in 1947 and raised their family on East Hill in Elmira, NY. Both shared a love of Seneca Lake, and spent nearly every summer at Glenora, a tradition that continues to be carried on by their descendants. Lyman and Lois traveled the world by car, boat, plane, horse, and RV. Lois loved their adventures (except those taken by RV), but also loved coming home to her beloved family. As one of the last surviving members of “The Greatest Generation”, Lois spent her life in service to others. She doted on her grandchildren, donated to every charity that asked, delivered thousands of meals through Meals on Wheels, and never met a dog that didn’t get “just one more treat”. Lois was an avid gardener. She filled her gardens with delicious vegetables, fragrant herbs, and beautiful flowers. Though she has not been able to tend to her gardens in many years, the flowers continue to bloom. She loved nature and spent much time teaching her children and grandchildren to identify and to appreciate our local flora and fauna. No family gathering would be complete without a discussion about the wind direction on Seneca Lake or the identity of the birds at the bird feeder. Lois leaves behind a legacy of love, dedication, and generosity. In lieu of flowers, please honor Lois by doing something in service of others or by donating to Tanglewood Nature Center, 443 Coleman Avenue, Elmira, NY 14903 or Meals on Wheels of Chemung County, 409 William Street, Elmira, NY 14901.  No calling hours are scheduled. A private service will be held at a later date.
