Obituary of Raymond F. Thompson

Age 82, of Elmira, passed away peacefully, on Monday, May 29, 2017 at the Chemung County Nursing Facility. Ray was born and raised in Elmira, the son of Francis and Martha (Witucki) Thompson. He is predeceased by his brother Walter Thompson and sister Marilyn Thompson. Ray is survived by his loving and devoted family….Patricia Morgan Thompson, his wife of 57 years; son and daughter-in-law, John M. & Patricia Thompson of Elmira, with their children, Andrew Ruth; Adam Ruth and his wife Amanda, and their son Henrik; Katie Thompson; daughters and sons-in-law, Joanne M. Thompson of Elmira; Carol A. & Donald Duranceau of Sanford NC, with their daughter Allyson; Susan L. and David Kent of Syracuse NY, with their daughter Bridget; along with several cousins, nieces and nephews. Ray was a 1951 graduate of Elmira Free Academy where he was an outstanding pitcher on the baseball team. He served his country in the U S Marine Corps from 1954 to 1957. Ray was a U S Postal Carrier in the city of Elmira, retiring after 33 years of service. After his retirement he could be found at the First Arena where he was a suite greeter. Following his motto, "I believe in giving back", Ray was a volunteer with the Samaritan Center for 25 years. He was a Master Euchre player and an avid baseball fan. Ray was a longtime member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians, where he enjoyed a hand, or two, of euchre, and a life-long communicant of St. Patrick's Church. Family and friends are invited to McInerny Funeral Home, 502 W. Water Street, Elmira, on Thursday, June 1, 2017 from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. A prayer service will be held there on Friday, June 2, 2017 at 12:15 p.m., followed by a Mass of Christian Burial, 1:00 p.m., St. Patrick's Church. Interment, with committal prayers and military honors, will follow at St. Peter & Paul's Cemetery. Those wishing may remember Ray with a donation to The Samaritan Center, c/o Catholic Charities, 215 E. Church Street, Elmira NY 14901. Ray's family extends a heart felt thank you to the staff at both Geisinger Medical Center and the Chemung County Nursing Facility for the wonderful care they provided Ray. Officers and member of the AOH will meet at McInerny Funeral Home on Thursday, June 1st, 7:00 p.m., to conduct a service for our brother Ray. Signed, Tim Tobin, President.
