Obituary of Nicholas Hobczuk

Nicholas Hobczuk "Nikola" Age 95, formerly of Norton Street, Elmira, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, November 14, 2012 at Elcor Health Services, Horseheads. Nikola was born in Kolamea Province, Ukraine on June 25, 1917, son of Nikola and Sophie Hobczuk. He was predeceased by his wife of 49 years, Anna Hucul Hobczuk in 1990. Nikola was also predeceased by son Nikolaj Hobczuk and daughter Mary Gallow. He is survived by son Michael Hobczuk, Elmira; son and daughter-in-law, Rev. Deacon John and Deborah Hobczuk, Horseheads; daughter Stephanie Trifoso, Elmira; son-in-law Eugene Gallow, Elmira; daughter-in-law Bonnie Hobczuk, Pine City. Also surviving are 8 grandchildren, several great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Nikola was a devout Ukranian Catholic. He was a member of St. Nicholas Ukranian Church, Ukranian Congress Committee, St. Nicholas Church choir and was a pyroghy worker. He retired from American Bridge. Nikola enjoyed gardening and working as a handyman around the house. Family and friends are invited to McInerny Funeral Home, 502 W. Water St., on Monday, November 19, 2012 from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Parastas will be held at the funeral home at 4:30 p.m. A Divine Liturgy will be held at St. Nicholas Ukranian Catholic Church on Tuesday, November 20, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. Committal prayers and interment will follow at St. Nicholas Ukranian Cemetery. Donations in Nikola's memory may be directed to Sobor Cathedral Kiev for the Patriarchal of the Resurrection of Christ in Kiev, c/o Diocese of Stamford, 14 Peveril Road, Stamford CT 06902-3019. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home and at the church service. The Hobczuk family would like to extend their sincere thanks to the staff at Maple Creek Gardens for the wonderful and compassionate care provided to Nikola over the last several years.
