It is with deep sadness that we announce the death of Brendan C. McCarthy, a wonderful husband and most amazing father. Brendan passed away Sunday, June 14, 2016, peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family. Brendan fought a courageous two year battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also known as ALS, or Lou Gehrig's disease. Brendan's life began in Elmira, NY on May 18, 1976. He is survived by his wife Killeen (Kane); four children, Kiersten, Kaelyn, Keenan and Bailey; parents, Thomas and Nancy McCarthy; brother, Sean (Michelle) McCarthy; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Joseph and MaryAnne Kane; brothers-in-law, Jeremiah (Amy) Kane and Shaun (Rian) Kane; nephews, Connor McCarthy, Liam and Quinn Kane and a niece, Brooke McCarthy; along with numerous loving relatives and special friends. Brendan was raised in Horseheads, NY and was a graduate of Horseheads Class of 1994. He earned a Bachelor's Degree from Cortland State and Master's Degrees from both Binghamton University and Mansfield University. Brendan was a Special Education teacher at Horseheads High School, where he spent many hours poolside coaching the Horseheads Thrashers Swim team. Both personally, and professionally, Brendan impacted the lives of countless individuals throughout his life. He will be remembered for his devotion to family, witty charm, dedication to education, and passion for swimming, running and bicycling. His strength and upbeat attitude since his health declined was admirable. To honor his memory, enjoy the little things in life, hold your family in love, celebrate your success and learn from your failures. His family would like to extend their gratitude to the many doctors, nurses and caregivers for their support, compassionate care and kindness. To all their family and friends, a special thanks for the many meals, gifts and support. Family and friends are invited to visit McInerny Funeral Home, 502 W. Water Street, Elmira, on Wednesday, June 24, 2015 from 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Brendan's Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, June 25, 2015 at 1:00 p.m., St. Patrick's Church.
