age 97, passed away peacefully at the Chemung County Nursing Facility on May 27, 2013. Bernie was born in Elmira on April 20, 1916, son of the late Thomas A. and Mary Daley Malone. In addition to his beloved parents he was predeceased by his sisters, Sister Rita Malone SSJ and Mary Catherine Elliott. Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 71 years, Mary Kane Malone, and his six children: Bernadette (James McMahon) of Washington, DC; Kathleen of Rochester; TJ (Mary) of Elmira; Patricia (Phil Kwiatkowski) of Arvada, CO; John (Jill) of Pine City; and Ginny (Tom Coon) of Corning. He also leaves eight grandchildren: Joseph McMahon (Bridget), Kelley Malone Knight (Dana), Kevin McMahon, Michael Malone, Molly Malone, Sarah Coon, Ryan Malone, and Timothy Coon (Natalie Stalis); and triplet great-grandsons. Bernie graduated from Southside High School in 1935 and St. Bonaventure University in 1940. He served in the U.S. Army from 1941-45 during World War II. He and Mary were married in Coronado, California on March 2, 1942. On return from service he joined his father in running the Personius and Malone retail store in downtown Elmira. From 1975 to 1985 he owned and operated Malone's Liquor Store on East Church Street. Until he and Mary moved to Appleridge Senior Living in Horseheads in 2005, Bernie had spent his entire life on Elmira's Southside and was a lifelong member of St. Mary's Parish. He was a proud member of the Elmira Kiwanis Club since 1945, of the John J. Lee Division of the Ancient Order of Hibernians and of the Eagles Club. Bernie was both blessed by and a blessing to his family and many friends. He enjoyed bowling, golf, and never missed a card game. The family wishes to thank the Staff at Appleridge and Chemung County Nursing Facility for their kindness and care of Bernie. At Bernie's request, his body has been donated to the University of Rochester Medical School to further medical research in geriatrics. There are no prior calling hours. Family and friends are invited to attend a Memorial Mass of Christian Burial on Thursday, May 30, 2013 at 11:00 A.M. at St. Mary's Church, Elmira. In lieu of flowers, donations in Bernie's memory may be directed to St. Mary's Southside, the Hibernian Building Fund, or the charity of your choice.
