
Obituary of Harold L. Casteline
Our beloved father, Harold L. Casteline (83) of Elmira, NY, passed away on May 9, 2025, surrounded by family.
Harold was born in Horseheads, NY to Raymond and Evelyn (Johnson) Casteline on August 23, 1941, and moved to Coryland, Pennsylvania in 1954 (at age 12) graduating from Troy High School in 1960.
He married his best friend and companion, Sally Lowman, on June 27, 1962, in Lowman, New York. They would have celebrated their 63rd anniversary in June 2025.
Harold is survived by his wife Sally; children, Cathy Riopko (John), Lori Groff, and Danny Casteline (Sarah); grandchildren Zack Ward, EJ Groff, Yustin Riopko, Lindsey Casteline; great granddaughter, Aria Rose Ward; and siblings, Larry Casteline and Carol Pendergrass. He is preceded in death by his parents and sister Brenda Casteline.
Harold retired from the Elmira Police Department in 1998 after 32 years of service. He was a proud veteran of the U.S. Army; a Free and Accepted Mason with General Sullivan’s Lodge #95 in Horseheads, NY; an Amateur Radio Extra Class licensed operator (KU2R); and a gifted handyman, repairing anything his family or friends needed. In his retirement, he loved to hunt, fish, and travel for shooting competitions.
Harold will be remembered for his loving kindness, his dedication to helping others, and his passion for his family and lodge brothers.
The family would like to thank the staff at Guthrie Clinic, especially the Hematology/Oncology Department, where he made many friends and received excellent care, as well as staff at Guthrie Robert Packer Hospital, for the care and compassion they provided Harold
In honor of Harold’s wishes, there will be no public services. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to Elmira City Animal Control, 842 Linden Place Ext., Elmira, NY 14901. Harold will be laid to rest beside his parents in Maple Grove Cemetery.
