Obituary of Gerald E. Hess

Gerald “Jerry” Hess, age 85 of Corning, NY passed away on Sunday, April 6, 2025. Jerry was born in Sayre, PA, son of Karr and Colleen (Little) Hess. He was predeceased by his sister Carol (Bob) Sherwood, brothers, Norman (Terry) Hess and Leroy Hess. Jerry is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Margie (Van Atta) and sons, David (Colleen) Hess of Corning, NY and Gary Hess of Elmira, NY; grandsons, Scott (Kerri) Hess of Corning, NY, Marty Hess of Durham, NC; granddaughter Sarah Hess of Corning, NY;  brother Douglas Hess of Elmira, NY; sister-in-law Bonna Hess of Millerton, PA; and brothers-in-law, Ronald Van Atta of Oakland, CA and Dale (Rose) Van Atta of Corning, NY; as well as several cousins, nieces and nephews. Jerry served in the United States Seventh Army in Germany. He was employed for 34 years with NYSEG and retired as a UC&M supervisor in Horseheads, NY. Jerry loved his family, home, camping, and fishing. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. Jerry will be missed by all who loved him. Jerry was a long-time member of Caton Church and Elmira Heights American Legion.  Family and friends are invited to a graveside service, led by Pastor Dick Hurd, on Monday, April 14, 2025, 11:00 a.m., at Maple Grove Cemetery, Horseheads.  Honoring Jerry's service to his country, military honors will be held at the cemetery.  Following the graveside service there will be a Celebration of Jerry's Life held at the Caton Fire Hall, starting at 12:00 noon.  Those wishing to remember Jerry may make donations to the Caton Church, c/o Caton Fire Hall, 1118 Caton Road, Corning NY 14830.
