
Obituary of Joseph Francis Chalk
Age 88, passed away at the Arnot Ogden Medical Center on Friday, February 7, 2025. Joe was born in Elmira, son of Joseph A. and Bernice Button Chalk. He is survived by his loving wife of 66 years Ann Conklin Chalk; sons and daughters-in-law, Joseph J.”JJ” and Julie Chalk of Hickory NC, Raymond J. and Nancy Chalk of Charlton MA; granddaughters, Mariah Locke (Robert) with son Xander, Erynne Snyder (Chase) with daughter Presley Mae, Sarah Chalk, Alexis Perez (Jesse) with son Kyson; sister Joann Farwell; sister-in-law June Conklin of Elmira; along with several nieces and nephews. Joe was predeceased by sister and brother-in-law Dolores and Samuel Pizzo; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, John Conklin, Margaret Jean and Andrew Mehalick, Mary Ellen and William Maycumber Sr.
Joe grew up on Elmira’s East Side. He was a graduate of St. Peter & Paul’s Grammar School and a 1955 graduate of Elmira Free Academy. After high school, Joe enlisted in the US Navy serving for 2 years and then for several more years with the Navy Reserve. Joe retired from Anchor Glass in 1999 after working for 40 years in the glass industry. Joe was a devout Catholic. In earlier years he was an avid golfer who would be on a golf course every day. Joe, along with his brother-in-law Andy, were very involved with their granddaughters’ activities. They enjoyed traveling to see them participate in their sporting events at both the high school and college level.
Family and friends are invited to McInerny Funeral Home, 502 W. Water St., Elmira, on Tuesday, February 11, 2025, from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. A prayer service will be held at the funeral home on Wednesday, February 12, 2025, at 9:15 a.m. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. at St. Mary’s Church, 224 Franklin St., Elmira. A livestream of the Mass will be available through the Facebook page for Most Holy Name of Jesus Parish (https://www.facebook.com/ElmiraCatholic). Committal prayers and interment, with military honors, will follow at St. Peter & Paul’s Cemetery.
