Obituary of Iro Greven

Age 88, passed away peacefully at home on January 18, 2025 with her loving children by her side.  Argiro was born in Kounoupia, Kynouria, Greece, the daughter of Panayiotis and Kalliope (Karaminza) Kontoroupis.  She is survived by daughter Mary Greven, with husband Bill Kimmel of Albany; son George Greven of Rochester; brother James Condax of Athens, Greece; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.  She was predeceased by her husband of 65 years, Peter G. Greven, the original owner of Central Hots; sister Irene Boudouris; brother George Kontoroupis; and beloved aunt and uncle, Panayiota and Christ Stathis.

After completing high school in Greece, Argiro came to the U.S. where she met and married Pete, her best friend's brother.  Argiro and Pete were founding members of St. Athanasios Greek Orthodox Church, where she sang in the choir.  She served in various offices of the Women's Philoptochos Society, including president, and was instrumental in planning the church's annual dances and bake sales. Her baklava was a notable attraction at all church social events.  Argiro delivered Meals on Wheels for many years with her dear friend and cousin by marriage, the late Penelope T. Patros, and later with Pete.

The family wishes to extend their deep appreciation to her home health aides, the "A" Team, who helped make the last few months of "Miss A's" life easier. The family expresses deep gratitude to the many wonderful and supportive neighbors who looked out for Argiro and Pete over the years, especially Andy Granger.

Family and friends are invited to attend a funeral service at St. Athanasios Greek Orthodox Church, 210 Franklin St., Elmira, on January 24, 2025 at 12:00 noon.  Committal prayer and burial will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers, those wishing may honor Argiro with a donation in her memory to St. Athanasios Greek Orthodox Church.
