Obituary of Martin J. Hughes
Martin “Marty” Hughes, age 71, passed away very peacefully on the evening of April 24, 2024. His wife Anne was with him as he journeyed through the last two years of declining health. Marty was the son of the late Loretta Daly Hughes and brother of the late Mary Hughes Banks. Marty is survived by his wife of almost 49 years, Anne Schappert Hughes, his children, Andrew of Elmira, daughters, Grace (Daniel) Conners of Syracuse and Margaret (Matthew) Coseo of Horseheads. Also surviving are his grandchildren, Alina, Noah, Jonah, Jack, Avery, Reed, Charlie and Liam; along with many cousins.
Marty graduated from Elmira Free Academy and went on to pursue his passion of woodworking and building trades at Williamsport College of Trades. He further developed his skills in cabinet making and furniture restoration in his own business and in the Elmira College carpentry shop. Marty also taught carpentry skills to the individuals affiliated with the Chemung County ARC.
Marty lived his Christian life as simply and plainly as he could. Marty loved sharing stories with his woodworking buddies, collecting antiques, particularly old tools, and gardening equipment. He enjoyed studying Bible history and was always ready for a good biblical debate.
In the last year he was fortunate to have compassionate home health care from his “Marty’s Girls” and from CareFirst hospice nursing staff. At Marty’s request a private funeral service for his family was held.
