Obituary of Eleanor A. Sullivan

Nora, age 93, passed away on April 25, 2023, at the Chemung County Nursing Facility in Elmira, with her family by her side. Eleanor was born on August 4, 1929, a daughter of Thomas F. and Helen T. (Rowley) Shea, in Hornell, NY. Nora and her husband Bob married on October 15,1955 at St. Ignatius Church in Hornell.  He predeceased her in death on Jan. 1, 2012 after 56 years of marriage. She is also predeceased by her sister and brother-in-law Mary & Joe Aini of Hornell, along with brother Tom Shea of Elmira.   She is survived by her six children and their families; daughter Mary Jo & Dan Johnson of Coraopolis, PA and their children, Amy Johnson, Eileen (Mac) Kravitz, Tom (Theo Windish) Johnson, and Tim (Jess) Johnson; son Bob & Maureen Sullivan of Newport, RI and their children, Peter (Kristyn) Sullivan, Steve (Caroline) Sullivan, and Megan  (Connor) Lokar; son Tom (Desiree Rogers) Sullivan of Elmira and his daughter Courtney Sullivan;  son Jerry Sullivan of Corning, NY; son Tim & Stephanie Sullivan of San Antonio, TX and their children, Emilie Sullivan and Brianna Sullivan; daughter Molly & Mark Venditti of Williamsville, NY and their children, Susan Venditti, Mark Venditti Jr., and Elizabeth Venditti. She is also survived by four great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Theresa Shea of Elmira, Kathleen Burger of Big Flats, NY, and Mary Ann Sullivan of Vestal, NY; cousin, Mary Jane Price of Hornell, NY, along with many nieces and nephews who knew her affectionately as either “Aunt Nora” or “Aunt Cissy”. Nora was a graduate of Hornell High School, Class of 1948 and St. James Mercy Hospital School of Radiology in Hornell.  She was a dedicated X-Ray Technician in the X-Ray Dept. at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Elmira for many years before her retirement.  She was proud of her Irish heritage. She enjoyed many sports and was an avid fan of the NY Mets and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish football team.  Nora was a longtime communicant of The Most Holy Name of Jesus Parish, St. Patrick’s Church.  She lived a devout Catholic faith and was a faithful adorer every week for many years at the Divine Mercy Chapel at St. Casimir’s Church.  Nora cherished her close-knit family and will be missed dearly. Her family would like to thank the staff on the third floor of the Chemung County Nursing Facility for the wonderful care and support she was provided since July 30, 2020. Calling hours will be held at the McInerny Funeral Home, 502 W. Water St., Elmira on Sunday, April 30, 2023 from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.  A prayer service will be held at the funeral home on Monday, May 1, 2023 at 9:15 a.m., followed by Nora’s Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. at St. Patrick’s Church, 604 Park Place, Elmira. Committal prayers and interment will follow at St. Peter & Paul’s Cemetery. Those wishing may remember her with a donation to Catholic Charities, 215 E. Church St., #110, Elmira, NY 14901,  Meals on Wheels of Chemung County, 409 William St., Elmira, NY 14901, or Alzheimer’s Association, www.alz.org.  Envelopes will be available at the Funeral Home for this purpose.
