I worked with Al for many years at Bern furniture in Elmira. I will say, I learned quite a bit about salesmanship from him.
Because of that, I got to work at two other Bern furniture stores, And managed the Ithaca store for a time.
He was a real professional.
He had a special way with customers that kept them smiling, and a couple of lines that I will remember him saying to prospective customers were ( When asked what type of wood something was?) He would reply. “Well this is genuine Tree wood”….and also “ I bet you’ve got money you haven’t even spent yet”.. His sense of humor was evident when dealing with people.
Al was the type of person you could have confidence in concerning things being done right.
My condolences to Sue and the family.

I am so sorry for your loss. It seems like yesterday we lived near you and we hung out in your large side yard. Your dad was such a kind person he will be missed. My thoughts and prayers go out to you Alan and Sue and your families.

Our most recent memory was having lunch with Al, Kym, Alan, Tink and I at Tags in Big Flats, NY. We talked about when he was young, lived on the farm, some of his recollections, that were very interesting.
We left the restaurant and I had gifted him a bag of homemade, Ginger snaps. Before leaving the parking lot, I observed from my car that he was busy chewing something. I got out of my car and went over to the passenger door of Kym's car, the window magically opened, "what cha doin" I asked? With a "big grin" on his face, like a kid caught in a candy store, "having my desert" he said. That was the last time we personally saw Pa "D" before his passing, and that "Big Smile" will be treasured and cherished always!

Our relationship with Pa D was originated over four decades ago, most likely in late 1981, when our first born daughter, Kym entered nursing school at St. Joseph's Hospital in Elmira and met Al's son, Alan in October. The beginning of an amazing journey with the Draht family from Pine City, NY.
Oh, the memories we have shared...and we will keep them close in our hearts and cherish them always!
May Al "Rest in Peace" and God bless him.
