Who could forget that phrase, in the fall of 2008 that brought such a wide smile to Mike's face, "is it Friday night yet?" as anticipation built for another blow-out Notre Dame football game. I think the guys played their all, as much if not more for Mike than they did for themselves. And I think that is what, to me, defined the kind of man Mike was, a person so genuine that he inspired others to be their better selves. On the field or off, Mike to his core was a good, good man. Jayne, I know your heart is broken, and Mike is beating himself up for that I am sure, but boy did he love you. I hope you can take some comfort in that. Our deepest condolences to you Jayne, and your family. I truly enjoyed the years that I worked with Mike at ND. He could always find the joy in life and liked to laugh. He also had a soft spot for animals, and as the Biology teacher, I somehow ended up getting recruited to try to help him save various animals, such as the skunk that fell into the window well at the old bowling alley, and the chipmunk that got into his office, among other things. (Both critters were released to freedom, although Mike had a little skunk perfume on him after that escapade.) Mike will certainly be missed. May you find joy in your wonderful memories.

My condolences to his family, especially to his wife Jayne. I used to live across the street from them.(about 20 yrs ago) My favorite memory of him was the day I was sitting in front of his house because bears were in my yard and he told me a story. The story went like this..the other day we were just sitting in the house and heard what sounded like a knock on the door. I got up and then told Jayne that it was for her. She , of course, screamed because at the door was a bear looking in. He then began laughing. I loved the story and still talk about it now. He will surely be missed!
