Obituary of Sandra Hill
Please share a memory of Sandra to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Sandra "Sandy" Hill earned her wings and went to sing, dance, and entertain the angels on March 22, 2022. (We’re certain she immediately went to find Elvis!)
Sandy was an extraordinary spirit whose true passion was caring for others. She was always the first to offer help when needed. Sandy was often referred to as “mother nature” and joked that all animals in need found their way to her. She rescued, fostered, and rehomed numerous animals over the years. She was a regular volunteer and supporter of the Chemung County Humane Society and a fierce advocate for animals everywhere. She enjoyed going for walks, and always had a bag of treats for any animal friend that she met along the way.
Sandy was best known for her sense of humor and ability to tell a good story. Known amongst many as “Crimefighter Hill”, her fearlessness, wild adventures and antics made for hilarious tales.
Despite a difficult diagnosis of Parkinson’s, she refused to slow down or miss out on special events. She would always say “I’m strong like a bull”, and she truly was. There was no quit in her.
Sandy retired from the Elmira Correctional Facility after nearly 20 years. Even at work she was known as "the cat lady" who insisted on feeding all of the barn cats at the facility. She was also an active volunteer with the prison choir.
Sandy’s favorite job was being a mother and grandmother, and she took great pride in the family that she created. She enjoyed nothing more than being with her grandchildren and participating in their lives and spoiled them without apology.
Sandy was preceded in death by her parents Verdun and Evelyn Monroe and her husband Brian. She leaves behind many loved ones to carry on her legacy of kindness, including her children Sean, Michael (Christine), Shannon (Kevin), and Ian (Stacy). Sandy’s “babies and littles” include: Molly, Maureen, Nicole, Greg, Alex, Aidan, Maya, Colin, Kara, Anna, Teagan, Aubrey, and Adam. Sandy is also survived by her siblings Bruce (Patti), Nan (Kevin), Tom (Shelly), and Fran (Sandy) who loved, supported, and were always there when she needed them.
Family and friends are invited to McInerny Funeral Home, 502 W. Water St. Elmira, on Saturday, April 23, 2022, from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. A Celebration of her life will follow the visitation.
