Bernard P. DeMember
Age 88 of Elmira, New York passed away on Tuesday, July 26, 2011 after an extended illness. A graduate of Elmira Free Academy, attended the University of Vermont, was Second Lieutenant and Pilot in the United States Air Force in World War II, appointed August 16, 1946 to the Elmira Police Department, Served All of the Bureaus in the Elmira Police Department, appointed Chief of the Elmira Police Department on October 26, 1968, graduate of the National Police Academy and the Federal Bureau of Investigation, graduate of Northwestern University Traffic Institute, graduate of Purdue University Institute of Traffic Engineering Course, completed courses at Elmira College in the Police related field, completed Correspondence courses in Criminal Identification and Investigation and in Police Administration and Science, retired from the Elmira Police Department in 1970, worked in the private sector for years and finally became Private Investigator for the O'Mara Law Firm. He is predeceased by his parents, John and Bernice DeMember, brothers, Raymond, Robert, Richard and sister, Lucille. He is survived by his beloved wife of 69 years, Rose, son and daughter-in-law; John and Marie DeMember of Massachusetts, daughters and sons-in-law, Christine and Thomas Kane of California and Kathleen and Peter Lowman of Elmira, NY and Bernadette DeMember of Ithaca, NY; grandchildren: Erik (Tina) DeMember, John (Nicole) DeMember, Jennifer DeMember, Rosaria (Mark) Kozar, David and Amanda Garrick, Olivia (David) Wahl, Melanie (Manuel) Palomo, Sara and Lauren Lowman; and five great-grandchildren. A private family service will be held at the convenience of the family at St. Peter and Paul's Cemetery. The DeMember family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to the staff of both Southern Tier Hospice and Elcor Health Services.
