Hazel Long Ruppenthal
Elmira: Age 93, passed away Saturday, September 17, 2011 at Arnot Ogden Medical Center. Hazel was born February 20, 1918, in Constable, NY, the daughter of Henry and Alice (Fletcher) Long. She is survived by her husband of 69 years, Jacob W. Ruppenthal; daughter and son-in-law Carole R. and Reverend James Towner of Buena Vista, CO; son and daughter-in-law, Mark J. and Eileen McCarthy Ruppenthal of Horseheads with their son Daniel Jacob; sisters-in-law and brother-in-law, Naomi and Hugh Campbell of Wilmington, DE, and Arline Learman of New Port Richey, FL; along with several nieces and nephews. In the early years of Hazel's career she worked as a civilian employee for the United States Army Corps of Engineers, working on the Manhattan Project and the St. Lawrence Seaway Project. Shortly after moving to Elmira, Hazel started Ruppenthal Real Estate which she operated for over 40 years. Active in the community she was a member of the Chemung County Board of Realtors, Zonta Club, and Elmira Business and Professional Women's Club. Hazel was an active member, and trustee, of Hedding United Methodist Church which later became Christ United Methodist Church and is currently New Beginnings United Methodist Church. Family and friends are invited to McInerny Funeral Home, corner of W. Water and Walnut Streets, on Wednesday, September 21, 2011 from 3:00 p.m. to 5:45 p.m. A funeral service will follow at 6:00 p.m. Committal prayers and interment will take place on Thursday, September 22, 2011 at Woodlawn Cemetery.
