Obituary of Marguerite S. Backes

Marguerite S. Backes Peacefully, Marguerite passed away at the Chemung County Nursing Facility on Wednesday, April 4, 2012 at the age of 97. She was predeceased by her husband Charles and son Timothy. Proud mother of Paul (Carolyn) and beloved Nana to Sean, Brian, Colleen, Kevin, Kierstin and Patrick, as well as to seven great-grandchildren, and one great grandson due in June. She is also survived by former daughter-in-law Mimi Laux Spankroy and daughter-in-law Mary Backes. Marguerite was retired from the Elmira City School District and was a life long, valued member of St. Patrick's Church. She was the last survivng member of her generation of Sullivans. She loved the annual Sullivan Family Reunion, time spent at Keuka Lake, and playing cards with her grandchildren. Her family will receive family and friends Monday, April 9, 2012 from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at McInerny Funeral Home, corner of W. Water and Walnut Sts. A Mass of Christian Burial celebrating her life will be held at St. Patrick's Church, Tuesday, April 10, 2012 at 10:00 a.m. Interment will follow at St. Peter & Paul's Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Blessed Sacrament Parish, 604 Park Place, Elmira NY 14901. The family would like to thank the 6th floor staff of the Chemung County Nursing Facility for their loving care of Marguerite.
