Obituary of Laurice J. Santoro

LAURICE SANTORO Age 83, passed away peacefully with family at her bedside on Wednesday, May 23, 2012 at Glen Cove Hospital on Long Island. She was a longtime Elmira resident, a dedicated mother and grandmother, and friend to so many. She was predeceased by parents Solomon Joseph & Marie Sahadi Joseph, and husband Vito. She is survived by her children Marie, Francine, John, Joe (Yoko), and Vincent (Jennifer), and grandson Sebastian. The eldest of six children, she is also survived by sisters, Renee Sophy, Marietta Kimball, & Charlotte Joseph, brothers, Ron Joseph & Vincent Joseph; and many nieces & nephews. For several years, she hosted visiting students and families from Japan at her home in Elmira. They truly became a part of her family and a very special part of her life, remaining a constant and treasured source of love and support over the years. Her long career in teaching touched the lives of many students at institutions that included Elmira Business Institute, Elmira Correctional Facility, Greater Southern Tier BOCES, and various Elmira School District Adult & Continuing Education courses. A communicant of St. Patrick's Church in Elmira for many years, she was a Eucharistic Minister, a sponsor for many Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) participants, a member of the 3rd Order of Carmelites, tireless volunteer, and one of the founding members of the Perpetual Adoration Chapel at St. Casmir's Parish. Also active in the Lebanese-American community, she was a former president and longtime member of the Elsylebam Club. Family and friends are invited to call at McInerny Funeral Home, 502 W. Water St. Elmira, NY 14905, on Friday, June 1, 2012 from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. A prayer service will be held there on Saturday, June 2, at 9:45 a.m., followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. in St. Patrick's Church. In lieu of flowers, donations to Gribbin School Greenhouse Fund, Seaman & Walnut Rds, Glen Cove NY 11542 would be appreciated.
