Francis C. Schmitt "Frank" Elmira: Age 78, passed away unexpectedly at his home on Tuesday, June 26, 2012. Frank was born April 30, 1934, in Brooklyn NY, a son of John B. and Mary (Doherty) Schmitt. He is predeceased by his brother John "Jack" Schmitt and sister Ellen Shaw. Frank is survived by his loving wife of 52 years Joan (O'Hara) Schmitt; son Charles F. Schmitt, Jacksonville FL and sons, Christopher Frank and Patrick Connor Schmitt; daughter and son-in-law, Mary Elizabeth and Thomas Hartman, Huntersville NC, and children, Emma Kate and Alex Thomas Hartman; daughter and son-in-law, Joan Marie and Kirk Fedor, Elmira and children, Daniel Patrick and Megan Elizabeth Fedor; sister-in-law and brother-in-law Kathleen and James Judge, Berlin MD; along with several nieces and nephews. Frank was a graduate of Fordham University. While at Fordham he was in the ROTC. He was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant, and thereafter rose to the rank of Captain in the Army Reserve. In later years he received a Masters Degree from Elmira College. He was a Certified Public Accountant working for Thatcher Glass for more than twenty years, first in NYC then in Elmira Heights. Frank retired as Vice President/Comptroller of Thatcher. Upon retirement he engaged in a private accounting practice. In his youth he took up sailing, serving as captain of the sailing team at Fordham. Enjoying summers on Seneca Lake, Frank continued his love of sailing and the water. He was a long time communicant of Our Lady of Lourdes Church. Friends are invited to Frank's Mass of Christian Burial on Saturday, June 30, 2012 at 1:00 p.m. at Our Lady of Lourdes Church. Those wishing may remember him with a donation to the SPCA, Route 352, Elmira NY 14903.
