Obituary of Alice L. Clawson

Age 97 of Elmira, died at her home on Friday, November 13, 2015. Alice was born in Coalport PA on April 27, 1918, a daughter of James W., Sr. and Chrissie (Shanks) Laing. She married Stuart B. Clawson on June 20, 1947 in Coalport. Stuart predeceased her on May 3, 2006. Alice was also predeceased by her brother James Laing, Jr.; sisters, Geraldine Shaffer, Bessie Burmeister, Helen Shank, Margaret, Luella and Christine "Teanie" Laing. She is survived by daughter and son-in-law, Lynne C. and Robert Nicotera of Cape Cod MA with their children, Mark (Jennifer) Nicotera, Aimee, Andrew (Sandra) Nicotera, Molly (Robert) Sorbello; son and daughter-in-law, Craig S. Clawson and Patricia Smith of Lowman with their children, Heather Clawson, Paige Clawson and Meredith Smith; great granddaughters, Chloe and Ruby Nicotera; brothers, Richard Laing and J. Robert Laing, Sr. both of Coalport PA; several nieces and nephews. Alice was a graduate of Indiana State Teachers College in Indiana PA. She earned her Master's Degree in Education from Elmira College. Alice was a business teacher at Southside High School for 24 years retiring in 1983. After retiring she kept active volunteering with Meals on Wheels and the Elmira Community Kitchen. Alice enjoyed swimming at the YWCA pool into her early 90's. She was an avid bridge player and always looked forward getting together with her fellow bridge ladies. Alice was a 60 year active member of Grace Episcopal Church. Family and friends are invited to McInerny Funeral Home, 502 W. Water Street, Elmira, on Tuesday, November 17, 2015 from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. A funeral service will follow at 4:00 p.m. Those wishing may remember Alice with a donation to a charity of one's choice.
