Emma Gregory passed away on January 3, 2010, at age 96. She was born Zedanka Matejeck in Gary, Indiana, on December 13, 1913 and moved with her family to a farm on West Hill in Elmira Heights, New York, as a young child. She attended Carr's Corner School, a one room school house, on upper Hoffman Street in Elmira, NY and graduated from Thomas A. Edison High School in Elmira Heights. She met Alexander Gregory of Horseheads and they married in 1934. They built their home the following year at 516 Hart Street in Elmira next door to her sister and best friend, Helen Sassano. When Al died in 1974 she continued living on Hart Street until 2003 when she moved to Bethany Assisted Living and then Elcor Nursing Facility. She and Helen worked for the Remington Rand during World War II and were bookkeepers for their husbands' business, Tops Taxi, during the '50's. Although Emma never had children of her own she took an avid interest in all her nieces and nephews and their families and was beloved by all. She will be remembered at a Mass of Christian Burial in her honor at St. Patrick's Church at 10:00 a.m. on January 9, 2010. Interment will follow at Maple Grove Cemetery in Horseheads, NY. At her request there will be no prior calling hours. In lieu of flowers please consider donating to a charity of your choice in her name.
