Obituary of Isabelle M. Schappert

Isabelle M. Schappert Age 90, of Elmira, died Saturday, March 13, 2010 at Arnot Ogden Medical Center. Isabelle was born June 25, 1919, in Elmira, daughter of Alfred and Josephine (Tyrasinki) Mitchell. Her husband Joseph J. Schappert predeceased her on May 22, 2009. Isabelle is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Anne S. and Martin Hughes of Elmira; grandchildren, Andrew (Hollie), Grace, and Margaret Hughes; great-grandchildren, Alina and Noah Hughes; sister and brother-in-law, Harriet and Leo Krolak of Elmira; sisters-in-law, Mary Mitchell of Connecticut and Phyllis Griffiths of Pennsylvania; along with several nieces and nephews. Isabelle was a graduate of Elmira College. She taught high school in Naples, NY, Hornell, NY and Brant Lake, in the Adirondacks, before marrying Joseph in 1949. After raising her daughter, Isabelle went back to work as a substitute teacher, for over 20 years, in the Elmira City School District, and at Notre Dame High School. She continued her love of teaching as an RSVP volunteer at Booth School until 2000. Isabelle's greatest loves were her family and her faith. She took great pride in the accomplishments of her grandchildren. She was an active communicant of Our Lady of Lourdes Church for over 50 years. Friends are invited to a Mass of Christian Burial on Tuesday, March 16, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. at Our Lady of Lourdes Church. Interment will follow at St. Peter & Paul's Cemetery.
